Blanket Box

A blanket box is usually a decorative wooden box that stores blankets, pillows, bed sheets and toys, among other items of suitable size. A blanket box opens from the top like a treasure chest, to which it often bears a close resemblance. Because of its high decorative value, a blanket box often doubles as a convenient coffee table or bench.

Blanket boxes coordinate aesthetically with the beds and other bedroom furniture. However, a blanket box can qualify as a unique and highly attractive furniture piece in it's own right. One of the most preferred formats is the antique Victorian style, to which cedar, walnut, maple and mahogany woods lend themselves admirably. In such models, the ‘aged’ look is de rigueur and furniture manufacturers strive to impart it by various means. They may employ several coats of hand waxing rather than the usual lacquering to give wood an aged appearance. Some of the most favoured shades for blanket boxes include ‘old wood’, ‘mellow brown’, ‘mahogany’, ‘ivory cream’, ‘cornflower blue’, ‘oyster’ and ‘pearl white’. An Oak Blanket box or a pine blanket box is equally Victorian.

The genuinely antique models are in vogue too. A number of economic blanket boxes are available and buyers can assemble many models at home. Such blanket boxes are flat-packed and dispatched in a disassembled state, along with detailed assembly instructions and sometimes even a basic tool kit.
