CupboardA cupboard is a piece of furniture or small recess with a door and usually shelves, used for storage. It is a type of cabinet that is typically made of wood (however iron, brass and other such metals are also used). It is used indoors to store food and crockery, so as to protect them from dust and dirt. The term “cupboard” dates back to the Middle Ages, but in all likelihood may have originated even before that. It was initially used to refer to pieces of furniture (usually a simple board or table) that were used to place cups or mugs, hence the name “cup-board”. However now a days, the term “cupboard” is used to refer to a storage area enclosed by doors. Cupboards come in varying shapes, sizes and designs. Antique cupboards are extremely popular and collecting antique cupboards is a big business in the United Kingdom. One can find many antique dealers and retailers across the UK. Antique cupboard is usually a hundred years old, and is desirable because of its age, rarity, condition, utility and design. However cupboards from the later eras (like 30s, 40s, 50s, etc) are also referred to as antiques and may command high premiums. Antique pine cupboards from the Victorian era are extremely popular. Also popular are antique corner cupboards and antique court cupboards. |
