GlasswareGlassware usually refers to tableware made from glass like glasses, dishes, cutlery, flatware, vases, etc. Glassware that is used as tableware includes drinking vessels; however dinnerware may also be made from glass. In more general connotations, glassware refers to any object made from glass. Off late, collecting of antique glassware has gained immense popularity. Majority of drinking vessels are made from glass. The term “beer glassware” is used to denote glassware designed specifically for drinking beer. The various types of beer glassware are pilsner glass, pint glass, pony glass, wheat beer glass, yard, etc. Other types of glassware are wine glass, whiskey glass, snifter glass (for brandy and liquor), sherbet glass, cocktail glass, shot glass (a small glass that can hold three ounces of liquor), highball glass (for mixed drinks), Collins glass (for tall mixed drinks), etc. Aside from serving a more utilitarian purpose, glass has also been used throughout history as a mode of art. A prime example of glassware meant for art is a vase. The ancient Greeks famously used vases to depict scenes, a trend which was continued by the Romans. But perhaps the most famous makers of glass vases would be the Chinese, who made frequent use of coloured glass. Chinese glass vases often feature intricately detailed designs of flora and fauna in various colours. |
