GlobeThe globe is a three dimensional representation of the planet earth in the shape of a sphere. Most globes do not consider the bulge below the equator or the flattening of the earth at the poles. The term ‘Globe’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Globus,’ which means a sphere or round mass. The globe is a scale model that could be used to depict the earth in relation to other celestial bodies like the moon and other planets. World globes are often used by meteorologists, politicians, students, etc. A map of the world could be drawn, painted or engraved directly on the surface of the globe. Several countries, locations and geographical features like rivers are marked on this map. The globe is often mounted with an axis on which it could be spun round to pinpoint a location. The lines of longitude and latitude are shown on a globe so that a location could be found more easily. Globes could be made from a variety of material like wood, metal and plastic. The natural topographical colours are usually present on these globes to depict land, sea, mountain, forest, etc. Light globes are ideal for presentation to younger students. Earth globes are available online and in shops across the UK. |
