PaintingPaintings have been in existence for over 30,000 years. Initially paintings were found in the form of cave paintings in various European caves. The purpose of these paintings is still not known completely. The oldest paintings are known to be found in France at the Grotte Chauvet. Every country today has its own style of antique paintings. Sometimes painters paint to express a thought or any subject. Paintings can be of still life, landscapes, abstract, photographs, mythology, emotions or politics. The most renowned mention of paintings are the ones of mythological figures on pottery and biblical scenes found on the interior walls and ceiling of The Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. The surface used for painting varies from canvas, wood, paper, glass, concrete, lacquer and several others. The size of the canvas or surface totally depends on the painter and his vision. Paintings made by famous painters today are sold for huge sums of money and are considered as valuable possessions by art lovers. Articles such as vases, bowls, bottles, cloths, wardrobes, etc that have been painted on by artists might also have vintage value.
