RegencyThe period from 1811-1820 is referred to as the Regency. During this period, George Augustus, the Prince of Wales was the regent during George III’s periods of insanity. The term Regency is also used to associate the years between 1795 and 1830, a time that was characterized by decorative arts, distinctive fashions and culture. During this time, the Prince Regent built the Brighton Pavilion. This era has been distinguished for its architecture, furniture, fashions, literature and politics. The Regency style of furniture had a touch of elegance and richness. Most of the furniture had a number of differing influences including Greek, Roman, Chinese and Rococo. Napoleonic expeditions to Egypt in 1798 resulted in the use of Egyptian motifs in Regency furniture and later became part of the Regency fashion. The arm rests and feet of the chairs and couches featured elaborate and curved designs. Chinese themes were also seen in imitation bamboo. Also elaborate ornaments were used on the flat surfaces of most Regency furniture. Bookcases, sideboards, chests, dining chairs, desk, cupboards, armchairs, coffee tables, chest of drawers and cabinets, are some of the furniture available in Regency style. Such Regency style furniture is easily available online. |
