About Wardrobe

A wardrobe is an essential piece of furniture found in most bedrooms. They differ from cupboards in that they are designed for the storage - especially the hanging - of clothes. Known in French as an 'armoire', a wardrobe was originally a large chest, used for protecting and often transporting expensive robes. As such, their mediaeval use was by the wealthy and elite, such as the Royal Family, court advisers and bishops. Over the centuries, the wardrobe evolved into an upright item of furniture and, as the middle classes grew, became a necessity for the majority of the population. Oak was the primary material for British wardrobes until the 17th Century. As the British Colonies in North America grew, other woods, such as walnut, could be harvested in the New World more easily than from British forests, where timber was in demand for military, as well as domestic purposes. As the British Empire grew into Africa and Asia, more and more exotic timber could be used for furniture. By the 19th Century, mahogany and satinwood were in high demand for use as wardrobes. Examples of this furniture are highly prized and collectable. As the environmental damage of using tropical hardwood became known, much furniture has since been produced from alternatives, including Scandinavian pine, metal, plastic and manufactured products such as chipboard and MDF. Today's wardrobes comprise a main hanging compartment and often one or more drawers above or below for storing other clothes, shoes and accessories.
