About David Shepherd

Born in 1931, David Shepherd is a British artist and outspoken wildlife conservationist. His paintings are often of wildlife, but he also paints air craft, steam trains and landscapes. Most notably, the Queen Mother sat for him and he produced one of the most recognised portraits of her. His craft (despite having no formal qualifications he trained under artist Robin Goodwin for three years) has made him one of the most collectable and financially rewarded artists in the world. Shepherd's art is now a British institution, immediately recognisable and well loved by art lovers, fledgling students and the general public. Painting style His wildlife paintings are often described as Photographic Realism. This is due to the sharp focus, attention to every tiny detail and the depth of image, producing a painting that at first sight, can be mistaken for a photograph. He has a standard composition of a pyramid arrangement and low viewpoint, adding drama and dignity to the animal subjects. Using an impressionistic style, a flurry of brush strokes and vibrant colour, the contrast of shadow/light are his 'mise en scene'. Subject matter An outspoken world-known conservation campaigner, his work is generally best known for it's wildlife subjects. Often African Bush animals are featured, elephants, zebras, tigers and gorilla's all in their natural element, and often in their animal families. A steam enthusiast, Shepherd has painted dramatic steam trains, in motion or arriving into a station, shrouded in steam and adding mystery to these archaic machines. Beautiful, expansive landscapes in a impressionistic tradition, these are a very popular choice for the art collector, whether connoisseur or novice.
