Activity Mat

An activity mat generally refers to a soft sheet spread on the floor for babies to play safely. These are made from soft materials such as cloth, wool, foam, soft plastic, etc. so that the baby remains safe while he is not observed by elders. These sheets are often made to order for there may be different size preference for parents. Ready-made mats are colourful, normally with bright colours that would immediately attract a baby’s attention. Most activity mats have standard shapes such as square and round. With more than one inch thickness, these activity mats protect the tender skin of a baby while he is crawling or engaged in other activities.

Over the period of time, activity mats have been developed to greater extend – i.e. these have one to four numbers or alphabets for faster learning. They also have popular shapes and objects that a baby is expected to learn. Some activity mats have three dimensional constructions for better perceptional development by encouraging them to discover newer objects. They have different shapes, spinning objects, rattles, musical toys and teether attached to them. Some of them also have mirrors that would amuse the baby, while he is looking at it. These attachments also help in developing the grip of a child.
