Bill BrysonBill Bryson is a well-acclaimed American author, famous for travel and scientific books. Born in 1951 in Des Miones, Iowa, he received his higher education at Drake University. Dropping out from his graduation studies in 1972, he began backpacking across Europe over the next few months. This venture brought Bill Bryson to meet his to be future wife, Cynthia, a nurse in a psychiatric hospital as well as gather material for his subsequent travel books. His first travel book, ‘The Lost Continent’, was a humourous account of his drives across small town America in his mother’s Chevy. ‘Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe’ documents his European backpacking trips. After getting back to the US and acquiring a college degree, Bryson retuned to Britain in 1977. Starting out as a journalist, Bryson grew to become the chief copyeditor of the business section of The Times, thereafter becoming the deputy editor for national news of the same section in The Independent. Some of Bill Bryson’s popular books include ‘A Walk in the Woods’, ‘I'm A Stranger Here Myself’, ‘In a Sunburned Country’, ‘Made in America’, ‘The Mother Tongue’, ‘Bill Bryson's African Diary’ and ‘A Short History of Nearly Everything’. Some of his books are available even in an audio format on CDs. In 2006, Bill Bryson was presented with an honorary ‘Order of the British Empire’ (OBE) title in recognition of his literary pursuits. |
