Bunty‘Bunty’, the British comic for girls, saw a long run from 1958 to 2001. An average issue of Bunty would consist of a collection of many smaller stories, competitions, features, letters pages, puzzles, promotions, advertisements and sometimes even sneak previews of the stories to come the following week; almost like a newspaper for girls. The stories sometimes went on to three or four pages and the back page was a cutout doll or paper clothes. With time, Bunty started featuring a wall poster of the popular teenage idols of the time on the back page. Most stories lasted for few months until the plot ran out of steam. But some stories were popular and struck a chord with the girl audience. Like “The Seeker” which had a good run for almost a year. The story revolved around a beautiful theatre actress looking for her lost urchin daughter. She would take on a masked identity at night to continue her search. But Bunty will always be best remembered for its famous story of “The Four Marys”. It was about four school girls from different backgrounds and appearances, their trials and tribulations with all things related to girls of their age – school, boys, looks, clothes, relationships and more. The changing content kept Bunty alive for over 40 years! |
