DickensMost of us have grown up reading the works of Charles Dickens, which reminds us of Christmas punch, quaint coaching inns and cosy firesides. Dickens was an extraordinary novelist, renowned as one of the greatest English language writers, well-known for sketching unforgettable characters and rich stories. Born in Portsea, England, in 1812, Dickens survived the mean streets of London, educating himself to become one of the greatest writers of all time. Dickens started writing stories at the age of 21, under the pen name 'Boz'. By age 24, his works got appreciated and he soon achieved international fame. His understanding and knowledge of people coupled with the knack of tell interesting stories, made him a genius that he was. Charles Dickens novel are set in the Victorian Era and speak of pathos, misers, murderers and abusive schoolmasters, as well as orphaned and starving children, which were a social commentary on the prevailing conditions in 19th century England. Despite becoming rich and famous, he never forgot his humble origins and visited the slums, factories, poor houses quite frequently. He died on June 1870, leaving one of the greatest literary legacies behind him.
