Doctor WhoDoctor Who is a British science fiction television programme developed by Sydney Newman, C. E. Webber and Donald Wilson. It is produced by the BBC and is based on the adventures of a mysterious time-traveller, known as "the Doctor", who solves problems and corrects wrongs whilst exploring time and space during his TARDIS days with his friends. In its original run, the show was praised for its imaginative stories and creative low-budget special effects. Doctor Who made its debut on BBC television on 23 November 1963 and originally ran for 26 seasons on BBC1. The theme music for BBC Doctor Who series was composed by Ron Grainer. More than 720 episodes of Doctor Who have been televised, with the episode length ranging from 25 to 45 minutes. In 1996, The Doctor Who television movie was broadcasted on the Fox Network. This was a co-production between Fox, Universal Pictures, the BBC and BBC Worldwide. Doctor Who has been featured in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running science fiction television series in the world. In the year 2000, Doctor Who was ranked third among 100 Greatest British Television Programmes of the twentieth century. Due to its increasing popularity, Doctor Who has in recent times spawned a wide range of merchandise like Doctor Who games, game books, picture cards, postage stamps, action figures, etc. |
