Enid BlytonEnid Blyton is one of the most successful children’s authors of the past century. This twentieth century British writer has created a special niche for herself in the category of children’s literature. Born in East Dulwich, London, on 11 August 1897, Enid Mary Blyton studied at the St. Christopher School in Beckenham. Although she had considerable talent as a pianist, Enid Blyton decided not to pursue further musical studies. Instead she got trained as a teacher and taught for five years in different schools. In 1922, a collection of Enid Blyton’s poems entitled ‘Child Whispers,’ was published. A couple of years later this talented writer married Major Hugh Alexander Pollock. After shifting to Buckinghamshire, the couple moved to a new house called ‘Green Hedges’ in Beaconsfield. She later divorced Pollock before marrying Darrell Waters, a London-based surgeon. Enid Blyton has written over six hundred books and several magazine articles throughout her literary career. Some of her most famous works include book series on the Famous Five, the Secret Seven, and Noddy. Some of her other popular works were the Wishing-Chair series, the Magic Faraway Tree series and the Barney Mystery series. Enid Blyton books have remained popular with children worldwide. With the characters in the Famous Five, Enid Blyton gave children a fictional world that they could easily relate to. Enid Blyton’s St. Clares series were written mostly for younger readers. |
