George Orwell also known as Eric Arthur Blair was an english author, journalist, novelist, critic, political and cultural commentator. George Orwell is one of the most reputed English-language essayists that the 20th century has produced. His most famous works, ‘Animal Farm’ and ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ based on totalitarianism and Stalinism, were written and published towards the end of his life. George Orwell was born on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, Bengal Presidency, British India. His first written essay was 'The Spike', published in Horizon magazine. He then wrote a novel ‘Burmese Days’ in 1934 and a few essays like ‘A Hanging’ in 1931 and ‘Shooting an Elephant’ in 1936. The experiences of his low life were written in 'The Spike' and in his book ‘Down and Out in Paris and London’ in 1933. In order to earn a living he worked as a school teacher in a private school, Frays College, near Hayes, Middlesex. He wrote on his work as a teacher and on his life in the novel ‘A Clergyman's Daughter’ in 1935. Due to ill health and pressure from his parents he gave up his job as a teacher and worked as a part-time assistant in a second-hand book shop called the Booklover's Corner, in Hampstead . George Orwell conduct a research on poverty amoung the depressed working class in northern England, which appeared in ‘The Road to Wigan Pier’ in 1937, after which he married Eileen O'Shaughnessy. In October 1949, he was remarried, to Sonia Brownell. Shortly after his second marriage George Orwell died in London from tuberculosis at the age of 46.All through his life he supported himself as a book reviewer, writing long and sophisticated works that have had an impact on literary criticism.
