DrillA drill is a tool for creating holes in materials like wood, metal, stone and several others. The main functional part of the drill is the drill bit that rotates and cuts into the target material. Bow drills were the earliest type of drills used. In 1889, Mr. Arthur James Arnot invented the electrical drill. In 1895, the portable electric drill was introduced by Wilhelm Fein in Germany. The trigger-like switch mounted on a pistol-grip handle was patented by Black & Decker in 1917. The hand-powered drills include brace and bit, gimlet, cordless drill, breast drill/eggbeater drill, push drill, pin chuck among others. Twist bits are used to drill small holes usually in metal, timber, plastics and other such materials. Screwdriver bits are used to tighten threaded screws, masonry bits are used for drilling into block, quarry tiles stone, brick or concrete. Spur point bits are best for drilling holes for dowels since the sides of the holes are parallel and clean. Flat wood bits are used for drilling large holes. Some of the other type of drill bits include hole saw, forstner, wood auger and countersink, among others. |
