It is a part of the Letts group. Founded in 1921 as a mail order firm, Filofax’s initial products were personal organisational systems, the early customers being military personnel. In the following decades, the Filofax garnered a loyal fan following through maintenance of high quality. In the 1980’s, the firm’s popularity received another boost when reputed fashion designer, Paul Smith, began stocking the organizers in his outlets. In 2006, Phoenix Equity Partners bought a stake in the business.

The Filofax name itself was created taking into consideration its core business, ‘Filofax’, being a combination of the term ‘File of facts’.
