GearboxA gearbox is the general terminology for the transmission equipment inside a vehicle. In a motor vehicle, a gearbox provides different speed-power ratios, which are known as “gears” or “speeds”. Usually, at least one of these gears is in the reverse direction. Gearboxes are used in automobiles to find a suitable balance between torque and speed. Most modern gearboxes reduce the low torque and unsuitable high speed yielded by the prime mover output shaft to a more appropriate and usable lower speed with higher torque, or do the opposite and convert the high torque low speed of the prime mover output to a more usable high speed and low torque setting. The simplest of gearboxes have fixed gear ratios, and often only dictate the physical direction in which the power needs to be transmitted. Multi-ratio gearboxes allow for selection of one of the different gear ratios for optimum usability. In multi-ratio gearboxes, lower gear ratios (also called "gears") are used to increase torque and slow down the output speed of the engine, while the higher gears are used to increase the output speed. Multi-ratio automobile gearboxes are of the following types; manual, automatic, and semi-automatic. Used and repaired gearboxes for various VW, MINI, BMW, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Land Rover, Subaru models are available on many online shopping portals. |
