ShaperAs the name suggests, a shaper is a machine tool used for shaping or even surfacing wood, metal and other materials. The key application of this implement is on flat surfaces. A shaper is more cost-effective in comparison to modern machines like milling machines and grinding machines. However, as shapers are relatively more time-consuming in comparison to such modern methods, they are more useful in repair shops where the number of jobs is limited. Shapers usually have a sturdy construction, ensuring low-maintenance costs. The different types of shapers include standard, draw-cut, horizontal, crank, universal, vertical, geared and contour shaper. The most popular shape is that of the horizontal shaper. Additionally, there are wood shapers which are also called spindle molders. Spindle molders have some specially shaped bits that can cut a profile in the work piece that is fed. There are two varieties of wood shapers: one features a spindle on the side, while the other features spindle assembly at the bottom of the table. One can also use shapers to get certain specialized cuts by using certain accessories like sliding tables, tenon tables, titling arbor and interchangeable spindles (as spindle shafts come in a range of sizes). Shapers are also available as combination machines that feature a shaper with planers, mortises, jointers and sliding table saws. |
