About 106 Gti

The Peugeot 106 GTi entered the range in early 1996 at the time of the Phase 2 facelift that saw all models receive raised equipment levels, along with injected engines. The GTi replaced the previous XSi, again with a 16 valve DOHC version of the 1587cc TU5 L4 engine, but with power raised to 118bhp and producing 105lb-ft torque. This engine defined the car, making it rather fast, covering 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds and going on to reach 124mph. But in everyday driving, what really shone out was the car's grunt at relatively low engine speeds and the handling. Although the GTi shares basic chassis with its siblings, it's a well developed package with Macpherson struts up front and and transverse torsion bar suspension at the rear - the same recipe used in the fabulous 205GTi. Peugeot also treated 106 GTi buyers to larger discs all round, body kit, 14-inch Raptor alloys and black leather upholstery (though early models had cloth as standard). Better still, GTis built post-2000 are fitted with extra side airbags in the leather seats for added safety. This answers some of the main worries about buying a supermini at least ten years old ? that the 106 was never EuroNCAP crash tested, doesn't carry a safety rating and shares with the 205 a reputation for a very fragile bodyshell that won't survive more than one serious impact. It's wise to check underneath when choosing a used 106 GTi - for two reasons. One is to make sure the under-slung space space saver wheel is still there and the other is to take a look at the condition of the catalytic converter: performance 16-valve cars have a reputation for shredding cats and they're expensive to replace.
