106 GTIThe Peugeot 106 GTI is a high-performance hot hatch variant of Peugeot’s popular supermini, the Peugeot 106. The Peugeot 106 was introduced in 1991, and was positioned as an entry level car in Peugeot’s line-up. It was basically a heavily redeveloped Citroen AX, and was in direct competition with the Renault Clio. It featured a modern styling and was renowned for its comfortable ride and excellent handling. The Peugeot became very popular and was remarkable for its cheap running costs. Initially, the 106 was offered in basic XN, mid-range XR, top-spec XT and the sporty XSi trim levels. The Peugeot 106 GTI was available between 1991 and 2003. It replaced the XSi model, and was equipped with a 1.6 L (1587 cc) TU5 I4 16-Valve engine that developed 118 HP and 107 ft-lb of torque. It was available in only a 3-door version, though a 5-door version was also manufactured which was sold only in France. The Peugeot 106 GTI, along with the rest of the 106 line-up, ceased production in late 2003. Peugeot vehicles are also popularly known as “pugs”. The Peugeot 106 GTI has developed a cult following and is well revered by Peugeot enthusiasts. There are also many Peugeot 106 GTI clubs in the UK. |
