AMGAMG started off as a set-up for designing and testing racing engines for the Mercedes-Benz car company. AMG, an acronym for Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach, was established in 1967 and acquired by Mercedes-Benz in 1999. Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, a former engineer of Mercedes formed the main pillars of the company. The first credit was won by the 300 SEL 6.8 AMG, when it acquired a second place overall at SpaFranchorchamps, while taking the first place in its class. An engine developed by AMG debuted on a McLaren 8F car at the Interserie championship. In 1973, the company went ahead to offer performance enhancements to Mercedes and four years later, a winged door car, 300 SL was installed with 450 SE technology. In the beginning of 1980s, the company crossed the milestone of victory at the Nurbugring with the 450 SLC. In the same decade, AMG introduced a couple of performance oriented models including 500 SEC AMG with 276 bhp, 190 E AMG with 160 bhp (the car that won the DTM twice), the 500 SEC AMG that achieved 340 bhp and The Hammer or the 300 E AMG that had 360 bhp. The credit for the development of the four-valve cylinder head for V8 engine, especially for Mercedes-Benz, goes to AMG. The next in the series was the EVO II with 2.5 L, 176 valve engine. After the collaboration of AMG with Mercedes-Benz, they launched their first car, the C 36 AMG in 1993; followed by the E 50 with V8 engine, CLK-GTR with V12 engine and SL 73. Simultaneously, the join venture proved to be hugely successful in several car racing events. In the millennium, the company has launched a couple of successful models including the AMG version of the SLK and CLK. |
