AngliaThe Ford Anglia is a British car manufactured by Ford in the UK. Its production spanned almost three decades wherein four Anglia models were introduced. The first was introduced in 1940 as the E04A, which came mostly in black and sported an upright radiator typical of the late 1930s. In 1949, the E494A was launched with a front-end reminiscent of the 40s and a sloping radiator grille with dual lobes. Its production halted in 1953 after which it was called Ford Popular. The same year, Ford released the three-box style 100E which was made available as a 2-door Anglia or a 3-door Prefect. It came with an old-fashioned side-valve engine and vacuum-operated wipers. The Anglia 105E model was introduced in 1959. With a design similar to the 50s Lincoln or Mercury, this model boasted a slanted grille with bulging headlamps and a rear window with backward- slant, besides a flat roof and tailfins. The Anglia 105E ran on a 997cc overhead-valve straight- 4 engine and also featured a four-speed gearbox and electric windscreen wipers. It was eventually replaced in 1961 by Ford Escort, although both cars remain popular even today. The Ford Anglia 105E has made frequent appearances in fiction; it features in the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and in the British TV show, The Young Ones. The popularity of the model has led to the establishment of a few Ford Anglia 105E owners’ clubs in the UK. The 123E Anglia Super was later launched in 1962. It featured a bigger 1198cc engine, chrome bumper overriders, broad whitewall tyres and optional side stripes that ended at the tailfins. |
