Astra GteVauxhall Motors, a subsidiary of US based General Motors, is based in United Kingdom and manufactures motor vehicles. Vauxhall Motors introduced the MK1 Astra GTE model in 1983. The Astra name originated with Vauxhall’s 1979 model and featured a new unified engine for Vauxhall/Opel, though in 1978, a year earlier, the car was designed and built in Germany as Opel Kadett. The Astra was Vauxhall’s first model with front wheel drive. MK1 Astra GTE featured an 1800L fuel injected engine. This car featured an all-aluminium head, overhead camshaft and hydraulic valve filters. In terms of power, economy and refinement the engine of Astra proved to be substantially better when compared against the earlier generation of small engines, used in Vauxhall and Opel cars. In 1989, Vauxhall released Astra 16v with GTE technology that featured 156 bhp and a 2.0 litre fuel injected engine. It changed the entire image of family car model to race-bred performance car model. The Vauxhall Astra Mark2 or the MK2 GTE 16v model offers a maximum speed of 132 mph and a 0-60 mph sprint in 7.6 seconds. Although few of the earlier models featured an electronic dashboard with digital speedometer however, the later models reverted to analogue instrumentation. This model is available in estate, hatchback, saloon and cabriolet versions and comes with better aerodynamics than the earlier MK1 GTE model. |
