AustinThe Austin Motor Company is a famous manufacturer of automobiles based in the United Kingdom. It was founded by Herbert Austin in 1905 at Longbridge. The Company was a major partner after merging with Morris in 1952. The first car introduced by Austin was powered by a conventional 5 litre, four cylinder engine with chain drive. Around 200 models were manufactured during the first five years. The Company grew exponentially during the First World War. It was supported by the government with contracts from artillery to aircraft. Austin introduced small cars after the war to expand its market. The Austin 7 was manufactured from 1922 to 1939, which was an affordable small and simple car meant for the mass market. It was licensed by BMW and Nissan and copied by many companies including Japanese Datsun. The car was sold in America as Bantam and as Rosengart in France. The first Austin 7 was powered with a four cylinder 747 cc 56 mm bore by 76 mm stroke side valve engine that delivered an output of 10 HP. The Austin car came in many versions over the years, from Tourers to saloons to cabriolets to sports car to coupes and even vans. Several other automobiles also share the Austin name such as Austin Mini manufactured by the Austin Rover Group and Austin A35 produced by the British Motor Corporation. |
