The company manufactures high-performance wheels for motorsport and aftermarket applications. BBS was established in 1970 by Heinrich Baumgartner and Klaus Brand, as a factory to produce plastic body parts for vehicles. BBS is named after the starting initials of both the founders as well as the city where the plant is based. In 1972, BBS launched a new 3-piece racing wheel that became an instant hit in the automobile racing world. This uniquely designed BBS wheel was released for normal street cars and did exceptionally well. In the past couple of decades, BBS has developed many new innovative technologies as well. Around 1995, it introduced the RSII BBS alloy wheel which helped Benetton Renault win the Formula 1 World Championship, the same year. Recently, it introduced the “Air Inside Technology” (AIT) where the wheel structure features hollow chambers to compensate for small air volumes, thus providing improved handling capabilities and increased fuel efficiency along with strength and rigidity. Today, the company is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for some of the leading vehicle manufacturing companies like BMW, Audi, Daimler-Chrysler, Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar.
