BedfordBedford is a subsidiary company of Vauxhall Motors that manufactured all types of small and medium weight commercial vehicles. Established in 1930, Vauxhall motors, a British subsidiary of General Motors (GM), specialises in production of commercial vehicles. The first British-built Bedford Lorry was produced in 1930. Its success was followed by the launch of the first Bedford PSVs, in 1931. With introduction of the WT range in 1934, the Bedford brand was firmly established as a dependable vehicle. Bedford’s “W” series comprised of 30 cwt trucks and two ton versions. Its bus version featured 14 seats or 20 seats on the longer 2 ton chassis. During World War II, the production of commercial vehicles was temporarily suspended. As many of the British army had lost most of its tanks at Dunkirk, Vauxhall was commissioned to build the Churchill, which was finished in less than three months. With its superior engineering and performance, Bedford became a significant part of the World War II, with vehicles like the 15 cwt MW to the mighty Churchill tank. With the 15 cwt MW truck, the 30 cwt trucks, the OX and OY, and the 3-ton general-purpose QL truck, the British Army had about 250,000 Bedford vehicles in service, during wartime. Bedford has produced a range of vehicles, since its inception. Popularly used Bedford vehicles include the Bedford Rascal, Bedford truck, Bedford taxi, and the Bedford TK. |
