BMW M3BMW’s E46 platform represents the fourth-generation of the company’s highly successful 3 Series compact executive car. It was launched in 1998 and replaced the E36. The E46 is the first of the BMW models with the contemporary, rounded styling. The E463-Series was launched initially as a four-door saloon only. The touring and coupé models appeared in 2000 and the compact version in 2001. Engine choices were 1.9 8v (316i) and 1.9 16v (318i) four-cylinder petrol and 2.2 (320i), 2.5 (323i), 2.8 (328i) six-cylinder petrol. The BMW E46 sedan received a facelift in 2002. Changes included redesigned headlights, new bumpers and a stiffer chassis. Also, the 316i and 318i models received new, more powerful engines. In 2004 the BMW coupe was also given a facelift which included new headlights, fenders and bumpers, new exterior colour choices, along with redesigned sidemarker lights and tail lights. In mid-2005 the E46 sedan was replaced by E90. The E46 touring was also replaced later in the same year. The record year for the E46 was 2002, when 561,249 vehicles were sold worldwide. The E46 platform remains in production in the coupé, convertible and M3 variants. The E46 experienced enormous success in all markets and was widely considered the performance benchmark in its class. |
