About C20xe

The C20XE was a classic General Motors Europe high performance engine that powered many Vauxhall and Opel performance cars during the late 1980s and early 1990s. This 1998 cc, 16v DOHC inline 4-cylinder petrol engine was manufactured between 1987 and 1994. Known to professionals and experts as the XE, the C20XE is also widely known as 'Red Top' for the distinctive L-shaped red metal spark plug cover inserted into the silver-coloured cam cover of earlier engines. GM's Head of Advanced Engine Development in Germany, Dr Fritz Indra, designed the XE as an evolution of the 1987 C20NE engine. Although iron blocked, the engine was intended to be suitable for competition and so Cosworth in the UK were called in to help design the alloy cylinder heads. Cosworth actually cast some heads, creating 'Coscast' versions of the XE. The C20XE was first seen on the 1987 Opel Kadett GSI 16v. In this form, equipped with Bosch Motronic 2.5 ignition/injection, the engine produced around 153bhp. Power output dipped a little on later versions, equipped with catalytic converters. However, in the hands of tuners such as BD Motorsport or QED Motorsport in the UK, XE engines have produced upwards of 290bhp. QED also developed an aluminium cylinder block that reduces weight by almost 20 per cent and also allows it to be bored out to around 2300cc. There was one serious problem with the XE. Early versions of the Coscast head were porous, causing leaks in the cooling and oil systems as well as loss of compression. Some engines were fixed under warranty but there was no general recall. Later engines were fitted with a better head, made by Kolben-Schmidt, which can be distinguished by the welsch plugs pressed in at either end.
