Car TransporterA car transporter, also called an auto-carrier, is a vehicle used to carry automobiles from one location to another. This vehicle comes in varied sizes. Some transporters are humungous vehicles that have a capacity to carry many cars, vans and even trucks, while some mini carriers are able to carry only a single car. These transporters are useful when transferring a broken-down car towards the workshop or when delivering a new car from the showroom to the purchaser’s home. A cab in the front of the car transporter can seat the driver and one or more helpers, while the rear trailer-like potion is reserved for carrying the cars. Some car transporters have open trailers, while some trailers are closed. Closed trailers are sometimes preferred as the car being transported is protected from the vagaries of nature such as rain, hail, sunlight and dust. Closed trailers are used for classic automobiles or prototypes that need to retain the same impeccable appearance they had at the onset of the journey. The trailer is usually separate from the main part of the vehicle, and both are connected to each other with couplings. Couplings are generally of two types; fifth wheel and automatic. In the former type, the trailer is connected to and pivots over a coupling plate bolted to the vehicle’s chassis. In the latter type of coupling, a turntable located on the underside of the trailer connects firmly with the vehicles chassis. Most car transporters have sloping ramps on which the car can be rolled up onto the trailer. Slam barriers and sideguards keep the car safe and prevent the chance of body damages. |
