Cosworth EngineCosworth is an automotive engineering company that specialises in engines for automobile racing. This company was founded in London, in 1958 and is the second most successful engine designer ever to race in F1. Its association with F1 came to an end after the 2006 F1 season. Cosworth was initially a subsidiary of Ford, but is now owned by Gerald Forsythe and Kevin Kalkhoven. Cosworth has had a long relationship with Ford and saw the creation of the Cortina Lotus, Escort RS1600, RS200, Scorpio 2.9i 24V, Sierra Cosworth and Escort Cosworth. Cosworth has produced a wide range of tuned Ford engines. These four-cylinder in-line units are compact in design and are modified to provide increased power output. One of the popular Cosworth engine was the Formula 1 DFV (Double Four-Valve) engine. It was developed for the Colin Chapman's Team Lotus. This 90 degree 3 litre V8 engine was capable of generating over 400 BHP from the start. By the end of its remarkable Formula 1 career, the DFV reached over 500 BHP, serving as the dominant engine in Formula One. The DFV went through two major upgrades with the DFW and subsequently with the DFY. Later a larger version DFZ was launched that was fitted in Tyrrell, AGS, March, Lola and Coloni chassis. However, one can still find Sierra Cosworth engine for sale on many online sites. |
