About Double Decker Bus

The double-decker bus has two storeys and is used around the world for public transport. Typically, a double decker will seat between 60 and 80 people, although it varies from model to model. In the UK, the bus is usually between 9.5m and 11m in length, and 12m to 13m high. History The double decker dates from the 1820s - horse drawn and named the 'Omnibus', it was open decked and had wooden seats. It was this model that Gladstone referred to when he said the only was to see London was from the top of a bus. Today, the double decker remains a popular choice for tourist sightseeing trips. The first motorised version in London was put into service in 1904, and was a little unreliable. In 1910, a much more reliable model - the B-type - was introduced by the London General Omnibus Company (L.G.O.C). This model was put into use during the First World War to transport troops and equipment. After the war, bus stops were introduced. The use of bus services by the public in the UK began to go into decline in the 1950s as more people purchased cars, but picked up again in the 1990s thanks to greater investment. Uses Aside from public transport and sightseeing trips, double deckers are also used for themed tours - for example, some ghost hunting tour companies have painted the bus black, adorned it with spooky decorations and hired actors to keep the passengers entertained throughout the trip. Other companies hire vintage buses, do them up and rent them out for special occasions such as weddings; some convert the bus into a 'party bus' for hen dos and similar. People have come up with all sorts of imaginative uses for their second-hand double decker, some even convert it into a home!
