Escort Mk2

Ford Escort Mk 2 is the second generation of Escort cars launched in early 1975. This square-edged version was codenamed "Brenda" during its development. It used the same mechanicals as the Mk 1 and was developed along with Ford of Germany. Its station wagon and van versions applied the same panel work as the Mk I. All the MK1 models were carried over to the MK2. However, the “Mexico” model had its engine changed to a 1.6 ohc 'Pinto' as a substitute of the ohv for the UK market. The different models in the Mk 2 line-up were the “L" and "GL" models (2-door, 4-door, estate), the "Sport", "Mexico", "RS2000", "Ghia" (2-door, 4-door) and "Base/Popular" models.

In 1978, Escort Mk 2 was given a cosmetic update. Most of the models were given the square headlights (previously exclusive to the GL and Ghia variants), whereas some models were given the Escort Sport wheels and an upgrade in interiors. The 'L' variant was given a glovebox and centre console. Also, the front track was widened.

The Mk 2 Escort had a very successful racing career. The RS1800 had an 1800 version of the BDA engine and was specially created for racing. The BDA engine was later uprated to 2000cc and was rated at 270 bhp. The ‘works' rally cars had heavily strengthened bodyshells and were characterised by the wide wheelarch extensions. Mk2 Escort had a continued victorious run on the RAC Rally, winning every year from 1975-79.
