About Ford Pop

The Ford Pop is the name given to a model of car manufactured between 1953 and 1962. Its full name was the Ford Popular, but it was commonplace for the shortened form of the name to be used. At the time of its production it was the cheapest British car on the market. 1953-1959 Many people bought the Ford Popular because of the difficulty in acquiring affordable used cars at this time; the war had caused major disruption in car production and other new models were out of most people's price range. The Ford Pop fulfilled the need for a reasonably priced and basic vehicle. The 103E model of the Ford Popular, being a car for people on a budget, had little in the way of finishing touches. The bumpers were painted rather than chrome, and the windscreen was furnished with just one centrally placed window-wiper. Compared to other contemporary cars, it was definitely more similar in appearance to vehicles which were around before the war. 1959-1962The next model of the Popular was the 100E which featured several changes when it rolled off the production line in 1959. As well as looking radically different to the pre-war style model 103E (more like the Anglia which would develop later), mechanically it had been improved. It had hydraulic brakes as well as a stronger engine which yielded more power and allowed the car to accelerate more quickly and reach higher top speeds. There was also a choice between the basic and deluxe models. The Ford Pop is a nostalgic piece of motoring history and many people enjoy restoring old models to their former glory.
