Golf GTIThe Volkswagen Golf GTI (Grand Touring Injection) is the high-performance hot hatch variant of Volkswagen's popular small family car, Volkswagen Golf. The first generation VW Golf GTI Mk1 was launched in 1976. It featured a fuel injection system which was fitted on to its 108 BHP 1588 cc engine. The second generation VW Golf GTI Mk2 was unveiled in 1983. It was available in a choice of two engine variants: the 1.8 L 139 hp I4 16-Vlve and the 1.8 L 112 HP I4 8-Valve. During its life, the Golf GTI Mk2 underwent a number of external revisions. In August 1987, the GTI received new and larger grill slats, and in August 1989, a new “Big Bumper” was introduced. The third generation 2.0 L 115 HP I4 8-Valve Golf GTI Mk3 was launched in 1991, which was followed by the launch of the 2.0 L 150 hp I4 16-Valve Golf GTI Mk3 in 1993. In 1996, VW launched a limited edition 3-door "20th Anniversary" "Jahre" GTI variant, of which only 1000 were produced. The fourth generation VW Golf GTI Mk4 was launched in 1997. It was available in a choice of three engines: the 1.8L 125 hp I4 8-Valve, the 2.0L 115 hp I4 8-Valve and the turbocharged 1.8L 150 HP I4 8-Valve. The fifth and current generation VW Golf GTI Mk5 was unveiled in October 2003. It was equipped with a 2.0L 200 HP Turbo FSI I4 engine which was capable of developing 207 lbs of torque. |
