Golf Mk2Specialising in manufacturing cars for the masses, the Volkswagen company has successfully launched many different models that cater to different segments of society. One such automobile is the Volkswagen Golf, code named as Typ 17, and launched in 1974. The Mark 1, as well as the recently introduced Mark 5 (2003) model, has been rechristened the Volkswagen Rabbit. The compact, small family car was a pretty successful substitute for the then aging air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle. The front-wheel drive Golf rose to be Volkswagen's best-selling model in history, in addition to being the world's third best-selling model. The VW Golf mk2 holds a record of having more than 24 million units built by 2005. Initially, the VW Golf mk2 debuted as a 3-door hatchback style family sized car. Later variants sported a roomier 5-door hatchback, station wagon Estate and the convertible Cabrio. The second generation (Mk2) of Golf, christened the Typ 19 till 1989 (later Typ 1G), made its appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Germany, in September 1983. It was made available to customers in the UK in 1984, followed by sales in the US in 1985. The VW Golf Mk2 sported a larger bodyshell and had a wider range of engine options such as a GTD (Gran Turismo, Diesel) 1.6 "umwelt" diesel engine, a DOHC 1781 cc (1.8) 16-valve version of the straight-four GTI and a highly reliable 1781 cc (1.8) supercharged 8v "G60" GTI (Gran Turismo, Injection) engine. The transmission assembly options comprised front- or four-wheel drives. Volkswagen added an extremely limited edition hand-built Golf Mark 2 variant featuring all the best features and named as the "G60 Limited". This model was designed and built by the Volkswagen Motorsport division; only 71 units have been produced so far. |
