Renault 5 Gt TurboThe Renault 5 GT Turbo was a 3 door hatchback car manufactured by the French motor company Renault. This car was also available as a 2-door convertible. Renault 5 GT Turbo was introduced in 1986 as a part of phase 2 of the Renault 5. The engine used in it was a modified 4-cylinder, 8-valve ‘Cleon’ 1394 cc (bored out to 1397cc) engine. The engine was turbocharged with an air cooled Garrett T2 turbocharger. This engine allowed the car to accelerate form zero to 60 MPH within 7.7 seconds. In 1987, the Phase 2 GT Turbo was launched, thus replacing the Phase 1 GT Turbo model. It featured a water-cooled turbocharger, thereby increasing engine life. The turbo lag issue prevalent in the Phase 1 GT Turbo model was taken care of with the new modified engine. The new engine was capable of providing an output of over 120 BHP. Additionally, the Renault GT Turbo sported a new ignition system which allowed it to provide an additional 500 RPM. The new Phase 2 Renault GT Turbo had a front wheel drive layout, thus allowing more interior space. In 1989, it underwent modifications again and a new special edition Renault 5 GT Turbo Raider model was launched. The Renault GT Turbo was very popular with users due to its tuning potential and high speed performance. The production of the 5 GT Turbo stopped in 1991 and it was replaced by new Renault models Clio 16v and Clio Williams. |
