Renault 5 TurboIn the early 1980s, Renault, a French car manufacturer launched a high performance rally car, the Renault 5 Turbo. Its on-road variant was also manufactured that sported a Coupe body style. The Renault 5 Turbo car was listed as the number nine car on the list of the Top Sports Cars of the 1980s by the Sports Car International, in 2004. The Renault 5 Turbo or R5 Turbo sported a modified standard Renault 5 body. It featured a mid-mounted 1397cc Cleon turbocharged engine, which was placed in mid-body of the car, in the modified Renault 5 Chassis. The R5 Turbo which was later called as Turbo 1 in retrospect and was equipped with an engine that was capable of providing an output of 160 HP. The Renault 5 Turbo or the Turbo 1 formed the basis of all the racing derivatives which were produced later. The modified versions featured stronger engine internals with efficient intercoolers. The Cevennes and Tour de Corse were equipped with engines that were capable of producing an output power of 180 HP and 210 HP respectively. In 1984, the production of Renault 5 Turbo was stopped and it was replaced by its successor, the Renault 5 GT Turbo. The second version, Renault 5 Turbo 2 provided nearly the same levels of high performance as the Turbo 1 but was cheaper in comparison. It did away with many light alloy parts of the original R5 Turbo and instead used stock Renault 5 parts. |
