Towing DollyA towing dolly is a mechanical device consisting of a wheeled platform for moving heavy objects. It may be used for shipment, storage or transport purposes like hauling ATV's, motorcycles, snowmobiles, garden tractors and golf carts. It can also be used as a small trailer, or to tow another vehicle behind a motor home or RV or race car towing. It has a fifth wheel, which can be attached to a truck, semi-trailer or a trailer, to provide support. A towing dolly needs it's own rear lights and a registration plate. There are two types of dollies namely the converter dolly (which has two variants – an a-dolly and c-dolly), and the Low Loader dolly. Converter dollies usually have one to three axles and are designed to connect to a tow bar on the rear of the truck or trailer in the front. However, the low loader dollies are generally equipped with a gooseneck type drawbar and have two axles. The gooseneck type drawbar connects to the fifth-wheel pairing on the rear of a prime mover, to distribute the mass on the fifth wheel on the dolly between the prime mover and the wheels of the dolly. It usually has two axles. A towing dolly also plays a very important role in case of a break down of one’s car. Every automobile manufacturer gives a maximum towing limit of the vehicle produced. Towing dollies may be purchased according to one’s vehicle’s towing limit. |
