VR6The Volkswagen Group developed the VR6 engine for their front wheel drive vehicles. The VR6 resembles the V engine but with the cylinders offset from each other, and tilted at a much lesser degree than usual. The VR6 roughly means ‘inline V6 engine’ where R stands for Reihenmotor or straight engine (in English). The VW VR6 is a transverse engine, and has its crankshaft oriented laterally. Identified by the ‘AAA’ engine code, the VR6 is a four-stroke, internal combustion engine. Chain-driven overhead camshafts drive two valves per cylinder in a cast-iron crankcase. The oil pump driveshaft of the VR6 engine is operated with the aid of an intermediate shaft. In 1991, this six-cylinder engine was introduced in Europe for the existing Volkswagen models known as the Corrado and the Passat. This engine was initially offered with 2.8L and 2.9L capacities in these vehicles. Generating power as much as 187 HP, the 2.9L version featured a big throttle body, a 2.5-inch catalytic converter and a large inlet manifold. Released in the early 1990s, Golf’s third generation hatchbacks featured the VR6 engines. This engine is available for several models of vehicles designed by Volkswagen. The VW Golf VR6 engine can be separately purchased from stores and online sites. |
