VW TransporterThe VW Transporter is an automotive van manufactured by the German Automobile company Volkswagen. This van was introduced as the Type 2 or the T1 Camper in 1950, almost a decade after the first Volkswagen Beetle was launched. It was also the very first vehicle to have the driver’s seat placed above the front wheels and the engine placed at the rear. This spurred many imitations of the Type 2 by other companies, which adopted both prominent features. It eventually became a defining symbol of the hippie’s era in the 60s, as its broad box-like chassis could accommodate quite a number of people plus camping gear, cooking supplies and carpentry tools. Even today, custom hand painted Type 2s are a popular car collector’s item. Over the years since its launch, the Type 2 evolved into three more generations of VW vans. With the release of each generation, the VW Transporter van underwent drastic developments. The VW Transporter T4 was the fourth generation van which was launched in 1990 and was a front wheel drive. It was VW’s first commercial van which came without a rear engine. The VW Transporter T4 was replaced by the latest T5 generation which was released in late 2003. T5’s commercial vehicles include the panel van, chassis cab, optional dropside and window van. The VW Transporter T5 is also available in a selective range of lifestlye vans like the all new Transporter Shuttle/Kombi, the Caravelle/Multivan, the Kombi/Multivan Beach and the California. |
