About Xr2i

The XR2i was the much-loved 'hot-hatch' version of the Fiesta, offered by Ford in Europe from 1989 to 1993. The XR2i succeeded two earlier 'hot' Fiestas. The first was the XR2 that had been the performance version of the Mk. 1 and Mk. 2 Fiestas. When the Mk. 3 Fiesta was introduced in 1989, remaining 1.6L XR2 engines were used to power a new performance version, the Fiesta S. However, this proved a disappointment and Ford quickly realised something better was needed. So they transplanted the fuel-injected 8v CVH SOHC 1597cc engine from the Escort XR3i into the Fiesta, together with deeper bumpers and side skirts matching the Diamond White, Radiant Red, Mercury Grey or Black paintwork with trademark blue inset stripes, driving lights and front fog lights, and flared arches to accommodate wider 13-inch alloy wheels. The 132 bhp engine created a transformed 130 mph hot hatch that also boasted sports seats, upmarket stereo, central locking, electric windows, and optional heated front windscreen. In 1992, the CVH engine was replaced by the 1.8L Zetec 16-valve engine. The XR2i 16v also featured body-coloured wing mirrors and larger 14'' alloy wheels, together with upgraded interior trip, including deeper and more supportive seats with side bolsters, leather steering wheel and gear knob. Extra-cost Moonstone Silver and Pacifica Blue colours were added. However, the larger 16v Zetec engine actually offered less power (105bhp) than the old CVH 1.6. To overcome this problem, gearbox ratios were revised with lower 1st and 2nd gears and a longer 5th gear to bring 0-60 time and top speed into line with the old XR2i. Production of the XR2i ceased in 1993.
