BikinisA bikini is a two-piece garment that’s worn by females mostly during swimming or in hot weather. The two parts of the bikini are designed quite like women’s undergarments; the upper part of the bikini is similar to a bra, used for covering the breasts, while the lower part covers the groin. The lower part of the bikini can range anywhere from a g-string, to a thong, to shorts. This revealing garment is quite popular with teenage girls and young women. Although some Greek urns and paintings dating back to 1400 BC show women wearing two-piece athletic clothing, the modern version of bikinis came as recently as the 1940s. Modern bikinis were the joint creation of Louis RÈard, a French engineer and Jacques Heim, a fashion designer. The first bikini was a string bikini with a g-string back, and it was launched in a fashion show in Paris. The name bikini was based on a nuclear weapons site called Bikini Atoll, as its creators were aware of the potential stir that this creation could cause. Bikinis were banned by certain countries around early 50s. However, a few songs and movies later they came to be widely accepted. One can find a wide variety of designs these days in bikinis ranging from beach prints, tribal prints to mosaics to florals, among others. Additionally, there are different variants based on the bikini designs; these include tankini, monokini and microkini, among others. |
