BadgesA badge is a brooch-like accessory that is pinned to the user’s chest to generally depict allegiance or membership to an organization or group. It can also be a symbol of a task accomplished or an award won. Badges usually exhibit the wearer’s name which serves as a means of instantaneous identification in camps, hospitals, offices and schools.. While most badges are pinned to the wearer’s clothing, some are stitched on, usually along the periphery of the badge to prevent marring the image. Temporary badges are made of perishable materials like cardboard or plastic, while the long lasting ones are usually made of metal. In traditional lore, one of the most well known badges is the sheriff’s metal badge from the Wild West. This star-shaped badge is made of metal and represents responsibility and authority. During the frontier days, the wearer of this badge personified the constitutional law in an otherwise violent and lawless land. Among modern day youngsters, Cub Scout, Brownie guide and other adolescent camping badges are in great demand. Badges are often cherished as mementos of important events. Volunteer badges of various events are a reminder of participation. Military badges are bought by enthusiasts as a tribute to the valour of the armed forces. While most badges have functional value, some are worn solely for aesthetic purposes. |
