Buttons

Buttons are small round knobs that secure clothing or garment. This is done by passing them through threaded loops called button holes. Buttons are made from different materials and vary in sizes too. They are usually designed as per the requirements of the dress. Be it natural material like metal, wood, ivory, horn or synthetic material like plastic and glass, buttons are made from different materials that can be either hard or soft.

Different types of buttons abound in the market, including shank buttons with small rings or bars with holes. Covered buttons, as the name suggests, are covered with a piece of fabric; flat or sew through buttons have two to four holes that allow the thread to sew a button to the cloth. Some buttons are created with embroidery or fabric; these are called worked or cloth buttons.

Buttons have been in existence for ages, leading to a great demarcation in style and material used. Button styling also differs from country to country and culture to culture. Some enthusiasts have collected buttons of various designs and fashion, giving them a new definition beyond just being fastening devices. Most of these collectable buttons are produced in natural materials with intricate carvings. Some buttons are also valued and collectable if they belonged to prestige wearers in the past.
