FairgroundA fairground is the place where larger fairs or permanent fairs of cities and seaside resorts are held. However technically speaking, a fairground is any piece of land where the fair is held. In the UK, a fairground is an area on common land, which often has a history dating back to the Middle Ages. In the United Kingdom, travelling fairs are hosted by many large towns at specific times of the year. The routes that these travelling fairs follow are generally the same throughout. Funfairs are a collaborative effort between families of fairground travellers, and are not conducted entirely by one person. An average fairground generally revolves around a Lessee (who is usually the owner of a large ride), who sublets pitches and ground to other families, who in turn bring their own rides, stalls and shows, thus making up a complete fair. Though the allocation of ground and pitch involves plenty of negotiations and bargaining, most established fairs follow procedures known as "standard rights", which have been followed for generations. In Britain, fairgrounds are a very common sight in seaside resorts. These fairgrounds are more often than not run by fairground families who have decided to settle down, in whole or part. The largest fairground in the UK and Europe is the Hoppings, Town Moor on Newcastle, which is annually held during the last two weeks of June. Popular fairground attractions and rides are bumper cars, paratrooper, octopus, etc. |
