GuinessGuiness is a world famous brand of beer (dry stout) that was based on the porter style which started in the early 1700s, in London. Guiness has its parent company headquartered in London. The beer receives its distinctive flavour from the roasted barley in its unfermented state which also gives it its dark-ruby colour. This barley is Irish-grown and the water that is used in the beer is taken from the Lady’s Well in the Wicklow Mountains. Guiness is basically made from water, hops, barley malt, and brewers yeast. This beer contains 198 calories (838 kilojoules) per imperial pint (20oz UK), which is lesser than an equal sized serving of orange juice, skimmed milk or most non-light beers. Draught Guinness gets its smoothness due to its low level of carbon dioxide. Guiness gets its thick creamy froth because of the nitrogen mix added at the time of serving. The foaming action of the nitrogen in the draught can take some time for the beer to settle as it is poured in the glass, which might require a pause while pouring. The last porter by Guinness was brewed in 1974. Guinness stout is brewed in several countries under licence. Many researchers have claimed that the antioxidant compounds found in Guiness were beneficial to the heart as these were similar to those found in certain fruits and vegetables. Some of the Guinness stout variants available include Guinness Draught, Guiness Foreign Extra Stout, Extra Cold Draught, Guinness Bitter, Malta Guinness and Guinness Red, among others. |
