About Leicester

In the heart of the East Midlands lies the city of Leicester, a place steeped in history and famed for its connections to King Richard III. Situated on the River Soar, and bordered by the National Forest, Leicester is a goldmine of museums, exhibitions, historical attractions and cultural events. There are also numerous parks, lakes and wildlife areas, making this diverse city the perfect place to visit for all tastes and ages. Leicester History Built on top of the Romano-British settlement of Ratae Corieltavorum, the city's beginnings were estimated to have occurred around AD43, and since then Leicester has enjoyed a rich and varied amount of development. Leicester Abbey was built in the medieval years, and during the Industrial Revolution the city enjoyed a period of high prosperity, and was dubbed one of the 'workshops of the world'. Recent immigration over the last few decades has given Leicester an element of ethnic diversity, resulting in a city that is famed for not only its history, but also a welcoming nature and vibrant feel. Leicester Buildings Much of Leicester's attractions are historical buildings, museums and heritage houses, which have been standing for hundreds of years. From the Abbey Pumping station that opened in 1881, to the Corn Exchange, a Grade-II listed building erected in 1850, Leicester is the home to a rich tapestry of ancient buildings and structures which appear on numerous postcards and pictures of the city. The oldest, and possibly most famous building is the Magazine, a medieval gateway that was added to Leicester Castle in around 1410 now Grade I listed, the Magazine appears in many books and photographs depicting the history of this beautiful city.
