Medal

A medal is a piece of metal that features some special design to commemorate a person or event. Medals are custom made in a variety of sizes and shapes, ranging from large medallions to small plaques or plaquettes. They are generally made of gold, silver, bronze or lead.

Medals are given as a token of respect and appreciation for the person to whom it is given. Medals are issued by government authorities for services rendered, especially to a country, like the armed forces. Medals are also given out in honour to a winner by organisations in specific field like sporting, academic, artistic and other competitions. They are even issued either by official authorities or privately as a souvenir in commemoration or other use.

Military medal or medal of honour is issued to recognise the heroic performances in the battle field. They are issued as per the recommendations of the Defence department. In past days, soldiers were awarded with medals, which formed a part of the formal uniforms, designating the dignity and status of the particular person who wore the medal. Civil and military decorative medals are also issued in memory of some of the most notable men and events.
