Police’The Police’ were a popular British rock band that experimented with punk, reggae and jazz music. Formed in 1977, the members of the band included Sting (bass and lead vocals), Stewart Copeland (drums) and Andy summers (guitar) who replaced Henri Padovani. The band was sometimes called "Sting and the Police". The Police singed up with A&M in 1978 and released their first single ’Roxanne’ which failed to hit the charts. However, later in the same year, they released ’Outlandos d’Amour’ which eventually made it to the British Top Ten and American Top 30. The hits slowly emerged with ’So Lonely’, the re-release of ’Roxanne’ and finally a number one in 1979 with ’Message in a Bottle’. The band went international by touring Thailand, India, Mexico and Egypt. Their second album, ’Zenyatta Modatta’ released in 1980 stayed at the number one spot for four weeks, ’Don’t Stand So Close to Me’ became their second number one single. ’Ghost in the Machine’, launched in 1980, also became an instant success hitting number one in the UK, with ’Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic’ emerging as the biggest hit till date. Released in 1983, ’Synchronicity’ quickly climbed to number and stayed there for 17 weeks. The ballad "Every Breath You Take" from the same album spent four weeks at the top of the U.K. charts. Other hits like "King of Pain" and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" eventually launched ’Synchronicity’ as multiplatinum. Most of these hits feature in ’The Police Greatest Hits cds’. The band quietly split in 1985 with each of the members pursuing individual projects (the most successful being Sting). However, the band got back together again in 2007, performing at the 49th Grammy Awards. They are scheduled to tour this year and also perform at the upcoming Live Earth concert in July. |
