About Ww2

The deadliest conflict in history, WWII involved over 30 different countries with over 100 million personnel deployed. The war began on 1st September 1939 with the German invasion of Poland, triggering declarations of war from the United Kingdom and France. Germany, under Adolf Hitler, formed an Axis alliance with Italy and invaded or subdued much of Europe. The Germans, in a pact with the Soviet Union, annexed Poland and the Baltic states. The United Kingdom, together with members of the Commonwealth, fought the Axis alliance in North Africa, and in the Battle of the Atlantic to maintain vital food supplies. The German-led Axis invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, whilst in the Far East, Japan sided with Germany, bombing the United States' fleet in Pearl Harbour. Defeats for the Axis alliance followed: at the Battle of Midway, in North Africa and at Stalingrad. By 1943 the Germans had been defeated in eastern Europe. The Allies invaded Italy, forcing a surrender, whilst the Americans secured victories in the Pacific. The Axis began to retreat on all fronts. The Japanese Navy was defeated by the US Navy. The Western Allies invaded France, then marched into Germany, along with Polish troops and the Soviet Union, having already retaken its former territorial losses. Germany surrendered on 8th May 1945 (VE or Victory in Europe Day). Japan continued fighting, resulting in atomic bombs being dropped on two Japanese cities, Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Emperor Hirohito agreed in principle to surrender on 15th August (VJ or Victory over Japan Day). World War Two finally ended on the 2nd September 1945, following the signing of the official Instrument of Surrender by Japan. World War Two memorabilia is very collectable, ranging from uniforms and equipment to more personal items, such as diaries and medals.
